Life Story / Obituary


Mr. Richard James "Dick" McGarry, age 85, passed away on September 23, 2018. He was born on June 11, 1933 in Lake Twp, Benzie County, MI to Kenneth & Edrie (Carmien) McGarry and served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Carol Thompson on June 28, 1952 in Bear Lake, MI and had been employed as an ironworker until retiring. Richard was a member of VFW William J Beal Post #446 and enjoyed tinkering, fishing, golfing and traveling. But spending time with his grandchildren always made his day.


Wife of 66 years Carol McGarry; children, James (Elizabeth) McGarry of Brighton, Janelle McGarry of Muskegon, Brenda (Bob) McDowell of AZ, Karen McGarry of Williamston MI; Kristi (John) Christopherson of WA; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; siblings, Larry McGarry of AZ and Mitchell (Charlotte) McGarry of Newaygo; and 33 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents; brother Donald McGarry and sister, Shirley Barnard.


Friday, September 28, 2018, 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church with Rev. Lily Marx and his niece Linda Scheerer officiating and Military Honors. Interment in Pleasanton Township Cemetery. MEMORIAL: In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the St. Gregory's Episcopal Youth Program, 1200 Seminole Road, Muskegon MI.
