Life Story / Obituary


Lauma Balks Vilums, 66, of Norton Shores, passed away on February 15, 2018 at home with her family. Lauma was born in Douglas, Michigan to Ernests and Marija Balks on October 19, 1951. She attended Holland High School and went on to receive her B.A and Master’s degrees in Education at Michigan State University. She worked as a teacher at Holton Elementary for over 40 years. Lauma was an accomplished pianist. She enjoyed traveling and snuggling with her pugs Mico and Maya. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, friends and grandchildren. She was involved in Women’s Division Chamber of Commerce, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, an active member of Lake Harbor United Methodist Church and a member of the Viking Lodge.

She is survived by her husband, Elmars Vilums, her daughter Tia (Alfieri), two grand-children Alfieri Jr and Isabella, and daughter Marissa. In addition she is survived by her brother John Balks (Susan), brother-in-laws Valdis Vilums (Diane) and Aldis Vilums and her nieces and nephews Jennifer Case (Clayton), Kelly Hilldore (Adam), Kyle Vilums, Ryan Balks (Bethany) and Rachel Lankheet (Jason). Lauma is preceded in death by her parents, Ernests and Marija Balks.


A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 21st at 11am at Lake Harbor United Methodist Church, 4861 Henry St, Norton Shores, Michigan. Visitation will take place one hour before services. Luncheon will follow services at the church.
