Life Story / Obituary

Print

Judith "Judy" Viola (Gustavson) Edmondson died on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. She had just turned 88. Judy was born on October 19, 1928 to Karl Fritz Gustavson and Inga Christine (Anderson) Gustavson. Her only sibling, Robert, died as an infant. She married Walter Paul Edmondson on October 1, 1960 in Muskegon after they met at a social event. Throughout their 51-year marriage, they enjoyed outdoor life together in everything from tents and campers to sailboat cabins until Walt’s death in January, 2012. Judy graduated from Muskegon High School in 1947 and went to work in the office at Sealed Power until 1963. The highlight of her working career occurred after she earned a Licensed Practical Nurse certificate and worked in that capacity at Hackley Hospital. She found great satisfaction with her work as an LPN.

After retirement, Judy kept busy with several volunteer activities. Many will remember her smiling face from the years she volunteered in the Hackley Hospital coffee shop and as a volunteer usher at both the Frauenthal Theater and its predecessor, the Michigan Theater. Judy enjoyed singing and was a stalwart performer for both the choir at Samuel Lutheran Church and the Ivandra Singers at the Vikings Club. She was a long-standing member of the local Vikings Lodge #57 where she was most happy to take her turn as a volunteer bartender. Judy had a passion for playing cards-bridge, cribbage, pinochle-that continued into her 80s.

SURVIVORS

While Judy and Walt never had children, Judy is survived by a niece and five nephews who were the children of Walt’s only sibling, Alyce and husband Gordon Rockey (both now deceased). The niece and nephews-Larry (Linda), Colleen (Craig), Bruce, William, James (Maria) and Daniel (Tifenn) Rockey-were like surrogate children for Judy and Walt. Judy enjoyed spending time with her grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
